Offensive drive to Berlin and the drive to Tokyo

What stories did you find interesting on the Allied offensives to end the war in Europe and the Pacific? Was the allied call for an unconditional surrender a smart move? Should we have used nuclear weapons to end the war in the pacific? Do you have other comments on the war and its aftermath?

I think the call for an unconditional surredender was a vital key to ending the war. Look what happened after Desert Storm. although we "liberated Kuwait" should we not have struck at the heart of Iraq, taken baghdad, and thrown Hussein out of power? this decision was poorly thought out, and eventually Hussein was once again causing just as much trouble after desert storm as he was before Desert Storm

Now imagine if this was WWII, and we decided to compromise in comparison to Desert storm. What is compromise? As Sherry Rothfield blundtly but truthfully puts it.
"compromise is the art of dividing a cake so everyone believes he got the biggest piece"
The truth of the matter is, no one will settle for an agreement where they lose completely.

I am sure without a doubt that, had we prematurely taken a surrender less severe than then unconditional, it would have meant more loss of life later on. How did world war two start? because Germany carried a grudge after WWI. I theorize that an even greater grudge would develope after WWII, and maybe someone as fanatical as Hitler would come along and convince his/her people to start another world war.
And to add to that. the german air unit, known as the luftwaffe, had a few tricks up their sleeves that the allies did not see coming (of course these tricks, were just a few years too late). In fact the germans did begin to theorize building a bomb, probably just as great as the little boy that we dropped on Hiroshima.

Lucky for us, Germany foresaw their downfall as soon as the allies did, and did not begin building up the uranium required to build an Abomb. Today, some historians say, had WWII dragged on even for one more year, the axis powers may have stood a chance against the allies. possibly bombing a key US city, like washington D.C. Fortunately Hitler foresaw his doom just a bit too soon.

The Japenese (if that's how you spell it) were crazy. They were on some island and ran out of food so they cut the skin off the prisoners and ate the skin. Then put them in a pit so they could eat other body parts later.

Just read the book Fly Boys by James Bradley.

Once you start something you can't leave it broken and war torn. You need to finish the job. Just like in Iraq, we can't just leave and let all those innocent people die from evil regimes and agendas. The bomb needed to fly. It saved us from more casualties, it ended the war sooner, and it made the US on top of the pedestal for world powers. I do know also that innocent people died in Japan in the Atom bombs. But, did the nazi's and other Axis powers annihilate civilians all over in France and Great Britain. Well, the bell rang I need to run. i will continue this later.

Before the US entered the war, things looked kinda grim forthe allies. It was pretty much Britian vs the axis, but then the US joined in and Hitler attacked Russia, so there was a bit of hope. Then the Allied offensive started going well, and Hitler made some dumb moves, adnwe were back in business.

teh japanese were doomed from the start in a war with the Us, but they hoped Germany would distract us and that the strike at Pearl Garbor would put s too far behind to catch up. But after the Battles at Midway and Coral sea, and also the liberation of Rabul, the tide turned and the US, along with Britian and the Aussies, started pusing back to Tokyo

We definatly shouldnt have used nukes, that would have just been stupid. I think Nuclear energy should have strict laws and such so that it can only be used for energy purposes instead of makeing weapons grade materials.

i also agree with the unconditional surrender thing. if we dont just finish things and let them linger, thats how they come back and try to kill us. sorry, i dont think im going to be able to be intelegent enough to say anything else for today, enjoy the silence.

i think the dropping of the atomic bomb was a good idea. it ended a war that needed to end. it may have killed innocent people but it also saved more lives and it also made people afraid of the U.S and what we can do so no other countries would want to mess with us.

I think that it was a good idea to drop the a-bomb for several reasons. First off, it would have taken another 3 or 4 years and about another million American troops before we got even close to ending the war. Also, Japan and its economy would have been even more devestated to the point where they might not be a major power in the world today. I understand that whomever saw the bomb dropped thought it was the most terrible event they have ever seen, but their country did recover after the war, and they are one of the most technologically advanced countries of this time.

I think the allies did the right thing by using the tactics that they did. Also, the dropping of the atomic bomb was the right thing to do. It stopped the war probably saved millions of lives even though thousands were killed by it. If we didn't drop the bomb, who knows how long that war would have lasted.

I believe that we should not have used nuclear weaponsin Japan. when wedid thatit opened the door, for a worldwide nuclear threat. Everyonebecameon edge after they saw what happened, and now we will never get rid of our nuclear weapons.I believe we could have fought the Japanese. I think that if the rest of America would have seen what the effect of using nuclear weapons had on the rest of the world, they would have felt the same way.
